A Field Guide to Queenslander Stairs (A Love Letter, and a Complaint)

Updated 13 July 2026

There is no piece of Brisbane architecture more beloved, more photographed, and more genuinely brutal on moving day than the classic Queenslander staircase. This is a field guide, written with real affection and a healthy amount of complaint.

The turn landing: the real boss level

Every Queenslander staircase has at least one turn landing that looked completely reasonable until a three-seater sofa needed to navigate it at an angle nobody designed for. This is where a genuine plan — which end goes first, who's calling directions, whether the sofa needs to go over the balcony rail instead — actually matters more than raw strength.

The handrail: beautiful, and directly in the way

Original timber handrails are genuinely gorgeous and also exactly where a mattress edge wants to scuff. Padding the rail itself before anything goes up or down it is a five-minute job that saves a very visible mark on a feature nobody wants damaged.

The gap under the house: not actually usable space

Yes, there's often tempting extra room underneath a high-set Queenslander. No, it's rarely a practical staging area for furniture mid-move — usually too low, too exposed to weather, and full of whatever's already stored there.

What actually works

  • Measure the awkward bits before moving day, not during. The turn landing width, the ceiling height at the top, any low doorframes — know the numbers ahead of time.
  • Disassemble anything that can be disassembled. A bed frame in five pieces takes the stairs far better than one in one piece.
  • Pad every hard corner. See our furniture-wrapping guide for the technique.
  • Book a crew that's actually done this before. Queenslander stairs are genuinely routine for a Brisbane-based crew — much less so for anyone unfamiliar with the layout.

We run Queenslander staircases every week — it's practically a rite of passage for a Brisbane removalist. Get a fixed quote and mention the stairs; we'll bring the right crew size for it.
