The Ultimate Garage Sale Guide Before You Move
Updated 10 July 2026
The cheapest thing you can do before a move isn't finding a better removalist quote — it's moving less. Every box you don't pack is a box someone doesn't have to carry, and a garage sale turns the stuff you were going to donate or bin into cash instead. Here's how to run one that actually works.
When to hold it
Two to three weekends before moving day is the sweet spot — early enough that you're not scrambling to pack what didn't sell, late enough that you've already gone through most rooms and know what's actually staying. Saturday mornings from 7–8am get the serious bargain-hunters; finish by early afternoon once foot traffic drops off.
What sells, and what doesn't
| Sells well | Usually doesn't |
|---|---|
| Kids' toys and books, in good condition | Old TVs and outdated electronics |
| Kitchenware, small appliances that work | Worn-out furniture with damage |
| Tools, garden equipment | Textbooks, VHS/DVDs (donate instead) |
| Furniture in good condition, priced to move | Anything that needs explaining to sell |
Pricing to actually clear stock, not just list it
- Price low enough that people don't need to think. A $2 item that sells beats a $5 item that sits there until you're donating it anyway.
- Bundle the small stuff. "$5 for the whole box" moves ten small items in one transaction instead of ten separate haggling conversations.
- Drop prices after the first hour. Early birds pay closer to asking price; everything left by 11am should be priced to just get gone.
Getting people to actually show up
Post it on local Facebook buy-swap-sell groups and Gumtree/Marketplace 3–4 days out with photos of the best items — furniture and anything unusual gets the clicks that bring people to the rest of the sale. Bright signage at the nearest main road corner on the morning of the sale still works better than almost anything digital for walk-up traffic.
What to do with what doesn't sell
Don't let leftovers turn back into moving-day boxes. Charities (Vinnies, Lifeline, Salvos) will take clean, working furniture and household goods — most offer pickup for larger items. Anything genuinely worn out or broken is a job for a same-day rubbish removal booking rather than letting it sit in the garage until moving week.
A good garage sale pairs naturally with a broader declutter — see our downsizing checklist for the room-by-room version. Once the house is lighter, get a fixed quote for what's actually moving.
