Hot Tub & Spa Removal: What It Costs and How It Works

Updated 9 July 2026

A spa or hot tub is one of the heaviest, most awkward things in a backyard — several hundred kilograms empty, often wedged behind a gate or deck that wasn't built with removal in mind. Here's what actually goes into moving or removing one, and what it costs.

What it costs

JobTypical cost
Small inflatable/portable spa removalfrom ~$150
Standard hard-shell spa, easy access~$250–$400
Larger spa, tight access or stairs~$400–$600
Relocation to a new address (vs disposal)Quoted as part of your move — ask for a bundled price

What has to happen before removal day

  1. Full drainage. A spa must be completely empty before our crew arrives — a full spa can weigh well over a tonne, which isn't something any crew can safely lift.
  2. Disconnect power and plumbing. Hard-wired spas need power isolated (an electrician, if you're not confident doing this yourself) before the unit can be moved.
  3. Clear the access path. Side gates, deck boards, or fencing sometimes need to come out temporarily — we'll flag this when quoting from your photos.

How the removal itself works

Once drained and disconnected, a spa is walked out on furniture dollies or slid on protective sheeting, depending on the surface and access. Tight gates or fence lines occasionally mean a panel comes out temporarily rather than forcing the unit through — better a fence panel comes off cleanly than the spa's shell gets cracked squeezing through.

Relocating vs disposing

If the spa is coming with you to a new address, it travels much like any other oversized item — strapped and padded in the truck, positioned and reconnected at the other end (reconnection is usually a separate electrician/plumber step, not part of the removal itself). If it's being disposed of, we sort materials for recycling where possible rather than sending everything straight to landfill.

Combine it with your move or a clear-out

Getting rid of a spa is often part of a bigger property clear-out before a sale, or a straight swap when a new owner doesn't want the old one. Pair it with our rubbish removal service or your full house move for one coordinated booking. Get a fixed quote — a couple of photos of the spa and its access path is usually enough for an accurate price.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to remove a hot tub or spa?

Spa and hot tub removal typically ranges from $250 to $600 depending on size, access (stairs, side gates, crane requirements) and whether it's being disposed of or relocated to a new address. Get a fixed quote with photos of the spa and its access path for an accurate number.

Can a spa be moved to a new house, or only removed and disposed of?

Both are possible. A spa in good condition can be drained, secured and transported to a new address as part of your move. Older or damaged units are more commonly disposed of responsibly, with materials sorted for recycling where possible.

Do I need to drain the spa myself before removal?

Yes — the spa needs to be fully drained before our crew arrives. We can advise on the best drainage method when you book, but arrange this a day or two ahead so it's not holding up moving day.
