Shifting House in Brisbane: The Local's Guide
Updated 9 July 2026
If you grew up in Queensland, you don't "move house" — you're "shifting." Whatever you call it, shifting day in Brisbane has its own local quirks that a generic moving guide won't cover. Here's the version written for actual Brisbane streets.
Brisbane's housing stock changes the plan
A huge share of Brisbane homes are Queenslanders — timber, on stumps, often with stairs and a steep or narrow driveway. Shifting out of one of these is a genuinely different job to shifting out of a modern brick townhouse: furniture often has to come down external stairs, sometimes over a veranda rail with lifting straps, and access needs to be assessed before the truck turns up, not on the day.
If you're shifting into or out of a Queenslander, tell your removalist about the stairs, stumps and driveway slope when you book — it changes crew size, not just the quote.
Time your shift around traffic, not just the calendar
Brisbane's inner-city streets (New Farm, Paddington, West End) get genuinely difficult for a truck during school pick-up and peak commuter hours. A shift scheduled for an early morning start almost always runs smoother than a midday one, purely because of how much easier the streets are to navigate and park in before 9am.
Council permits: worth checking before shifting day
Inner-city Brisbane streets are often permit-zoned. If your street doesn't have obvious space for a truck, a quick call to Brisbane City Council or a check of the street signage can save a frustrating morning circling for parking. A good removalist will flag this at quote stage if your address looks tight.
Shifting to the Gold Coast? It's a bigger decision than a local shift
Plenty of Brisbane shifts these days aren't across the suburb — they're down the M1 entirely. If that's you, the logistics are genuinely different: a single dedicated truck for the whole route, one loading and one unloading window in the same day, and a fixed price that accounts for the drive. See our full Brisbane to Gold Coast guide if that's the shift you're planning.
