Moving Sustainably: Cutting Landfill Waste From Your Move

Updated 12 July 2026

A house move generates more landfill waste than most people expect — packing materials, broken furniture, and everything decluttered along the way. None of it needs to end up in a skip bin by default. Here's how to cut it down without adding extra stress to an already busy week.

Source boxes before you buy them

  • Ask local shops for their leftover boxes. Bottle shops and supermarkets often have sturdy boxes headed for recycling anyway — free, and one less thing bought new.
  • Check community buy-swap-sell groups. Someone who just moved almost always has a stack of good boxes they don't need anymore.
  • Reusable plastic crates are worth it for a bigger move. Several rental services deliver and collect them — no cardboard waste at all, and they stack better than boxes.

Donate before you bin

A genuine amount of what gets thrown out during a move is still perfectly usable — furniture, kitchenware, kids' toys, clothes. Our garage sale guide and downsizing checklist both cover this in more detail, but the short version: charities take more than most people assume, and most offer pickup for anything too large to drop off.

Recycle packing materials properly

  • Cardboard boxes — flatten and recycle, or better, pass them on to the next person moving
  • Bubble wrap and plastic — check if your council recycling accepts soft plastics separately
  • Packing paper — genuinely recyclable, no need to bin it with general waste

Choose a removalist that sorts waste, not just dumps it

If part of your move includes clearing out furniture or old items, ask whether the removalist sorts materials for recycling or donation before landfill, rather than sending everything straight to the tip. It's a fair question to ask any quote — see our rubbish removal service for how we handle it.

The net effect

None of this adds real time to a move — sourcing free boxes takes one phone call, donating takes one drop-off or pickup booking, and choosing a removalist that sorts materials costs nothing extra. It just means less of your move ends up in landfill by default. Get a fixed quote for your move or clear-out, and mention if sorting/donation matters to you — we build it into the job either way.
